A starbucks in London (in Kensington High Street) was destoryed by left wing protesters as part of the London demo against Israel. The story is getting little main stream coverage but says a lot about the irrationality of anti-Israel protesters and the racist demonization of Israel and anything Jewish.
| Spiked wrote: | | "Starbucks was completely destroyed: metal railings were thrown through its windows; fittings were ripped out; coffee machines were smashed to pieces. A special fury was visited upon this little shop." |
The rational (such as it was) for the attack was based on a campaign spread over the internet and by text messages. The campaign spread a libelous myth based on a satire that some anti-Israel, anti-Imperial, anti-corporate campaigners has intentionally reproduced out of context and without the clear warning that it was satire. Not only did this fuel racism and criminal damage... it broke copyright law as well!
| Spiked wrote: | The attack on Starbucks in London was not an expression of anti-imperialist rage but an act of undiluted irrationalism – and it revealed much about contemporary Israel-bashing.

Spiked also noted that "[it] spread through the ranks of the anti-Israel lobby by text message and email". This is the first time I've personally seen a reference to the "anti-Israel lobby". With so much written about the "Israel lobby" perhaps it is time for an expose on the "anti-Israel lobby"? There is too much coordination, to many of the same speakers and organisation involved for a claim of "spontenous" cooperation. The lobby exists, specially in the UK, and someone needs to look into it and those on it's fringe. Certain NGOs like War on Want comes to mind immediately.
The satire behind the misinformation was written by
Andrew Winkler. The Telegraph describes him as "an Australian-based ‘anti-Zionist media activist’ of German origin" and says the original article was "clearly advertised as a parody, on the anti-Zionist website ZioPedia". The site in question is not anti-Zionist but rather antisemitic. Both Andrew Winkler's name and the site have come up before. Even Holocaust denier Fredrick Töben (who runs the antisemitic website "The Adelaide Institute") agrees. Speaking on another issue in 2006 he wrote, "To my knowledge Ziopedia is primarily an >anti-Semitic< website".
Jerusalem Post has previously reported on Ziopedia stating that it was "Founded in May 2006 by the Sydney-based Rebel Media Group, ZioPedia is a Wikipedia-like on-line encyclopedia and a collection of blogs devaluing the Holocaust and attacking the Jewish people." Work by Australia's Anti-Defamation Commission saw Paypal, StormPay and Google Ads accounts tied to the site shut down for breaching their terms of service.
The satire itself, a letter pretending to be from Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz and claiming money for coffee at starbucks will help directly finance the Israeli military, seems to have had the local effect one expects from antisemitic writings - i.e. racist violence. As Winkler's original version WAS labled as satire, the incitement to violence, legally at least, was probably not caused by him but rather by those who later adapted the item making it look like serious evidence.
A Starbucks in Lebanon was also shut down and the windows defaced in recent days.

Thank you for putting up that fascinating story. It is just the sort of thing one would expect to happen in a Britain, which at least at an official level is becoming increasingly Islamofascist friendly and in which traditional British freedoms are being trampled all over in hob nail boots by the present fascist Labour administration e.g. the Master of Arms and the Speaker of the Commons allowing the police to search an MP's office without requiring them to produce a search warrant.
